Research Summary
Our lab focuses on the the discovery of novel biomarkers for Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC). we use proximal fluids (saliva, urine, blood) to identify these biomarkers in a non-invasive manner. Initially, we used a high throughput proteomic analysis methods like LC-MS to identify a comprehensive panel of biomarkers for oral cancer. We are also trying to validate these biomarkers for their precision score in early diagnosis of these cancers.
In Radiogenomics project, we are trying to make a prediction model based on the association of genetic variations (SNPs, mutations, insertions/deletions) in human genome with the treatment outcome such as radiation toxicity and radiation resistance. Here we use the cutting edge next generation sequencing technologies (HiSeq and MiSeq) to identify these genetic variations and their role in cancer treatment response. Our long term goal in this project is to predict the patient treatment outcome with higher accuracy from the genetic analysis of the patients.
In another of our project, we focus on the recently developed area of research focusing on the role of Circulating Tumour Cells (CTCs) in cancer progression and aggravating the disease. We hypothesize that despite being genetically identical to primary tumor cells, CTCs can survive in the hostile environment in circulation and does that without the collective protection from the tumor cell mass. CTCs can do this by modulating the gene expression changes driving the phenotypic variations. We are planning an assay development based on identification, enumeration and gene expression changes in CTCs for early diagnosis of cancer progression and treatment response.
